Update - October 8, 2024
Thank you for your continued interest in the future community park project. We are pleased to report that the conceptual and schematic design phases are complete, and the City Council has given its approval of the design in concept. As part of this process, the City’s park design consultant hosted several public engagement events in an 'Open House' format and delivered multiple presentations to showcase the key elements of the park’s future design.
Recently, the city completed the excavation and rough grading at the park site, including the construction of a drainage basin, which will serve as a key feature in the overall park design. This basin is an essential part of the broader Section 29 drainage infrastructure—a network of basins and conveyance systems designed to mitigate potential flooding during heavy rainfall events.
With the completion of the Section 29 drainage basin, the City has now engaged a surveying contractor to conduct a boundary and topographic survey of the park site’s current conditions. This survey will provide the foundation for the development of the site’s engineering drawings and final design. Once the survey is complete, the City’s park design consultant will begin drafting the construction plans for the park improvements, making necessary adjustments to ensure constructability, safety, ADA accessibility, and adherence to the project budget. The construction plans are expected to be finalized in early 2025, with construction anticipated to begin next Summer. The construction timeline is estimated to be 24 months.
As the construction plans approach finalization, and once it is confirmed that the proposed improvements fall within the allocated budget, a final Open House will be held to engage the community and present the final park design. This event is projected to take place in Spring 2025.
Project Overview
The City of Palm Desert has envisioned the creation of a new regional sports park in North Palm Desert and University District areas. The regional sports park has been preliminarily identified to include new recreational opportunities and activities for the residents of Palm Desert.
The future North Palm Desert Regional Park will serve to extend the continued investment that the City of Palm Desert is making in the community through opportunities to facilitate access to parks and open space, satisfying the recreational, active, and passive uses of the residents, and creating spaces that will celebrate the values of our community.

The City’s consultant, Interwest, led the event to listen to community input and answer questions. Technical experts were ready, including a traffic planner, landscape architects, and designers. Over 50 residents attended the event and provided feedback on the project. A second Open House will be held at the iHUB on Saturday, January 14, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Invitation mailers will be sent to all residents north of Frank Sinatra Drive.
Saturday, January 14, 2024
On Saturday, January 14, the City hosted the second Open House to hear the community’s ideas for two new parks in north Palm Desert. The event was led by Interwest, the City’s design engineering consultant. KESQ aired a news story the day before the event and was present to interview residents about their ideas for the parks. Technical experts were also present to answer questions and discuss the planning effort. Those who could not make it to the meeting can continue to provide input on Engage Palm Desert. The next steps include a presentation to the Parks and Recreation Commission and a preliminary analysis of public input that will be presented to the City Council.
