Monument & Wayfinding Sign Design Projects

Since February 2024, the City of Palm Desert has been advancing its Monument and Wayfinding Sign Design projects to enhance the city’s identity, navigation, and overall community experience. Both projects are led by Selbert Perkins Design, a nationally and internationally recognized firm with extensive expertise in wayfinding design. The City has worked closely with Selbert Perkins Design to develop cohesive signage solutions that reflect Palm Desert’s character and meet the community's needs. Additional information regarding each project can be found below.

Entry Monument Signs

The Entry Monument Signs Project is creating welcoming landmarks at key points throughout Palm Desert. These large-scale signs are designed to reflect the city’s aesthetic and serve as bold statements of identity for residents and visitors alike. Once finalized, the redesigned and updated entry monument signs will move forward for construction approval.

Project Goals:

  • Redesign 2 Existing Signs: At Washington Street/Fred Waring Drive and Monterey Avenue/Dinah Shore Drive, existing signs at these locations will be replaced with new designs.
  • Add 1 New Sign: A new sign will be added within the street median at Cook Street, north of Gerald Ford Drive.

Wayfinding Signs

The Wayfinding Sign Design Project updates Palm Desert’s navigation system, improving how residents and visitors move throughout the city. This comprehensive initiative creates a unified directional signage system that enhances navigation while maintaining a consistent and attractive design. The project considers critical factors such as nighttime visibility, safety, maintenance, and cost efficiency. Once finalized, the redesigned and updated entry wayfinding signs will move forward for construction approval.

Project Goals:

  • Improved Navigation: Clear, intuitive signage directing users to key destinations such as parks, schools, City buildings, and local attractions.
  • Unified Design Standards: A cohesive look and feel, reflecting Palm Desert’s identity.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Updates to existing signs and addition of new signage citywide.

Will all the existing monument and wayfinding signage be replaced with the selected design?

Merritt Price asked 1 day ago

Thank you for reaching out to us through Engage Palm Desert and for your interest in the monument and wayfinding sign project. We are always grateful for community engagement as we work to enhance our city’s infrastructure and aesthetics.

To answer your question, all existing wayfinding signs and two monument signs at the following locations will be replaced:

    • Fred Waring Drive at Washington Street
    • Monterey Avenue at Dinah Shore Drive

Additionally, a new monument sign will be added on Cook Street, north of Gerald Ford Drive.

At this time, the replacement of other existing monument signs has not been included in this project. However, we welcome and value your feedback. If you have additional comments or suggestions regarding the project, please don’t hesitate to share them with us.

    Best,

    City of Palm Desert

Are signs and monuments designed to be “frangible” so as to not add to injuries in the event they are struck by a vehicle?

Bill R asked about 1 month ago

    Dear Bill R,

Yes, signs and monuments will be designed to be frangible, with breakaway bases or posts. This means they are made to break or bend on impact, reducing the chance of causing serious harm during a collision.

    Best, City of Palm Desert
